Racecourse
Nottingham is a flat, left-handed oval track with easy turns. The oval course is a mile and a half long with a run-in of four and a half furlongs. Although the draw has little effect on the outcome of races on the oval course, low numbers are often preferred. On the straight course, which stages five and six-furlong races, horses drawn low are favoured when the stalls are positioned on the far side of the track. If they are on the opposite rail, horses drawn high are deemed to hold an advantage.
The five-furlong track record of 58.40 seconds, set by Minstrel King, dates back to 1960, but in 1994 Hoh Magic set a new two-year-old course record over that trip that was half a second faster. Blake's Treasure holds the mile record at Colwick Park, achieved a decade ago, while Pearl Run negotiated the track's longest trip of two and a quarter miles in the fastest time in May 1990. The leading trainers at Nottingham over the last five years are John Dunlop, Henry Cecil and Michael Bell. Top jockeys include Kieren Fallon and 11-times champion Pat Eddery.
